At iilo, we believe impact-focused communication design can change the world and that business can be a force for good! This isn’t just a “nice” sentiment, it’s a core value of our business that ripples through the work we do, the way we work together as a team, and how we work with our clients. After a lot of hard work and determination, the whole team is beyond proud that iilo is now a Certified B Corp.

For those who may not be familiar with B Corporations (i.e. B Corps), they’re companies that meet high verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability to all of their stakeholders. What does that look like you ask? B Corp companies create high impact strategies for an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy. They’re part of a global community of businesses who believe in leaving the planet better than the way they found it while still making a profit.

Getting B Corp certified is no easy feat. It requires a business to have comprehensive impact standards to measure and support their changemaking efforts. So, to celebrate our accomplishment, I’ve decided to shout out a few of our favourite B Corps! (This is just the tip of the iceberg. I may need to do a follow up post in the near future!)

Decade Impact

First off, I want to talk about Decade Impact. Kristy O’Leary and Brianna Brown co-founded this Vancouver-based business to help impact-driven businesses achieve B Corp certification by defining, measuring, managing, and communicating their impact. Madelen and I have our own experience working with Kristy and Brianna as past participants of their Getting To 80 program for businesses looking to pass the B Impact Assessment. I’m continually inspired by their no green-blushing, no letting perfection get in the way of progress, we can call delight in the power of change-making attitudes!

Salt Spring Coffee

If you’re a coffee fan, you’ll love the next featured company. Salt Spring Coffee founders Mickey McLeod and Robbyn Scott began their journey by finding a sustainable way to bring coffee to Salt Spring Island. “In their quest for coffee that was environmentally friendly and fair to farmers, they built long-term partnerships with producers to source organic, shade-grown, fair trade coffee.” This company’s commitment to B Corp and making an impact has been a source of inspiration to me for years. In fact, while working on their coffee lifecycle poster and website in 2010, they were the first B Corp I worked with, and the first time I had noticed the B Corp logo.

Fairware

As a full-service promotional merchandise company specializing in ethically sourced and sustainable promotional products, Fairware lets you “rest assured that your marketing merchandise lines up with your values.” As leading experts in North America, they approach their work with a “strategy first, products second” philosophy. It’s no surprise that Fairware was picked as the supplier of the beloved iilo mugs our team sips their morning coffee from (myself included!).

Fresh Prep

Now for something tasty! Established in 2014 by childhood friends Becky Brauer, Dhruv Sood, and Husein Rahemtulla, Freshprep aims to make eating delicious, high quality food everyday as easy as possible. “We are committed to making your life in the kitchen, and outside the kitchen, as easy and as stress-free as possible.” As a Certified B Corp, they believe you shouldn’t have to choose between convenient, tasty meals and the health of our planet. I love their variety of recipes, the ready-to-go pre-prepped portions (although my compost pile is getting a bit thin) and their zero-waste kits!

Get in touch and share your favorite B Corps (or maybe you’re a B Corp I need to know about?) Either way, I encourage you to check out these businesses for yourself and show your support!
