As a part of iilo’s “Meet the team” series, please meet Richelle Veñegas (she/her)!

Professional graphic design is more valuable than ever in a world that is increasingly reliant on technology. A graphic designer is able to skillfully blend strategy, experience, intuition, and innovation to create truly unique results that serve a communication or business goal.

At iilo, we will always support humans who bring expertise in graphic design, web design, project management, communications, and more. Our team is made up of core team members and a diverse group of collaborators, so we’re always ready to assemble the necessary professionals to meet our clients’ communication design needs.

On our core team, we can always depend on the talents of graphic designer Richelle Veñegas. Learn more about her in the Q&A below!

How would you describe your work as a graphic designer?

As a graphic designer, I create a strong visual language and visual presence for clients. I work hand-in-hand with the communications team to showcase the important work that our clients do, making sure the messages are visually appealing and clear. I pay attention to technicalities like information hierarchy and colour contrast so the content will be easy to read and accessible.

How did you get into graphic design?

I’ve been doing art since I was a kid and dabbled in photography during high school. But when I started to consider a career path, I didn’t want to be a traditional artist or art teacher. Through talking with others, I heard about Capilano University’s design program and the great reputation it had. So I went ahead and enrolled in the program, which launched my graphic design career!

After graduating, I worked both in-house and for design studios in BC. I was exposed to a range of industries, including a tea company, a travel agency, and a wellness brand. I love variety, so it’s been really fulfilling to join iilo, where I get to work on many different projects.

What’s it like to work as a graphic designer at iilo?

I’ve been on iilo’s core team for two years now, and I appreciate the diverse and values-aligned clientele. I find that really exciting as a creative. It’s awesome to be able to work with impact-focused businesses that care about environmental and social initiatives. It’s very rewarding as a designer to feel like I’m helping to create positive change.

What have been your favourite projects at iilo?

I love working on branding projects, like when I did the logo design for Alternatives for Women’s rebrand. I also enjoyed working on the impact and hunger reports for Food Banks BC and creating graphics and materials for CPHR BC & Yukon’s annual conference. But it’s hard to choose a favourite project because I love the variety of work at iilo!

What stands out about working at iilo?

The first thing that stands out is the fact that iilo is a virtual company. It’s my first time working remotely as a graphic designer, and I actually got the chance to work from Sardinia, Italy, last year! Even with the time difference, it all worked out smoothly. It’s been so much fun to do more travelling while working. I feel really supported in being able to do the things I enjoy, thanks to the flexibility offered by iilo.

Another thing that stands out is the professional growth. I’m definitely growing as a designer with iilo providing the resources and open space for sharing knowledge. iilo’s focus on inclusivity and accessibility has exposed me to whole new areas of design that were never taught in my university program. I’ve also been encouraged to attend inspiring conferences like DesignThinkers and axe-con, which were also excellent opportunities to connect with other iilo collaborators!
