Communication design challenge

Untapped Accessibility is a Canada-wide accessibility consulting firm that supports employers, service providers, and communities to create more accessible and inclusive experiences. Grounded in lived disability experience, its work combines practical frameworks, training, and community engagement to help organizations make meaningful, real-world progress on accessibility.

While its existing website was accessible and visually modern, Untapped was ready for a stronger digital presence to support its expansion across Canada and position itself as a national thought leader in the accessibility space. To achieve this, Untapped engaged iilo to complete a website renovation focused on a comprehensive content overhaul, user experience and design upgrades, and supporting web development.

This work was done at a pivotal moment in the accessibility landscape. More organizations are choosing to comply voluntarily with the Accessible Canada Act ahead of its January 2040 goal to make Canada barrier-free. With proposed digital accessibility updates to the Accessible Canada Regulations approaching in June 2027 and June 2028, Untapped Accessibility was well-positioned to articulate its expertise and readiness to support this growing demand.

We approached this project as a collaborative renovation and listened closely throughout the process. Through working sessions and iterative reviews, we aligned strategy, writing, design, and development around a single goal: creating a digital experience that centres users and makes accessibility actionable.

Our work focused on repositioning the website around diverse client needs and real-world use cases. We applied plain language and accessibility-first principles throughout, to communicate accessibility concepts clearly and confidently, and created a flexible site structure to support future growth and new offerings.

Outcomes

Strategy

By prioritizing user experience and clear communications, we refreshed what was already working while repositioning the site to feel distinctly user-focused. The result is a website that supports Untapped Accessibility’s national reach and communicates its value with confidence.

Writing

All existing content was rewritten, and new sections were added to better reflect Untapped’s strength in the “how” of accessibility, all grounded in the lived experience of disability and real-world implementation. The content now clearly connects services, frameworks, and outcomes, helping clients understand how each offering supports measurable progress towards accessible workspaces, services, and communities.

Design

Working with Untapped Accessibility’s existing brand, which already stands out in the accessibility space, we introduced more visual energy and consistency. Our expanded use of imagery, graphic elements, icons, and easy-to-process layouts brought new life to the site while maintaining focus and usability. A template made in Canva empowered the in-house team to continually add and edit team members’ photos with a unified look.

Web development

The site was programmed to enhance functionality while elevating accessibility. We introduced a search function, improved filtering for the blog and resource-rich content, and strengthened usability across the site to support user exploration and interaction.

Accessibility

Ahead of the site launch, an extensive audit by Easy Surf tested the site from the first-hand experience of disabled users. The audit found approximately 35 accessibility issues—a significant outcome compared to the 100–200 issues typically found during Easy Surf’s website audits—reflecting the strength of the accessibility-first approach we took throughout the project.

Client empowerment

A key goal was ensuring Untapped Accessibility could confidently manage the new website independently after our work was done. The training materials we delivered enabled a new staff member to manage the website backend without having been involved in the project—a clear indicator of long-term usability and sustainability.

Collaboration

Strong collaboration was central to the project’s success. iilo’s deep understanding of Untapped Accessibility’s business, paired with clear, direct feedback from the client team, allowed the work to move efficiently while maintaining a high bar for quality and impact.

Our impact

“Untapped Accessibility recently worked with iilo on a refresh of our website. The team went above and beyond, providing insights into design, content, and guiding us through the complex process of creating an accessible website. iilo really cares about their clients’ success and we’ll be looking for opportunities to lean on them again in the future.”
